Costume for the role of Barbara Radziwiłł is one of the most famous theatrical costumes of Helena Modjeska. Sewn of black velvet and fair muslin or batiste, bodice is fitted with tucks and buttoned up in the middle of the front with large, decoratively shaped buttons. Wide velvet Bertha collar all embroidered with pearls is sewn into a plunging neckline covered by insertion - arranged radially creased muslin on lining. Creases are covered with ribbon with pearls sawn on it. Stand-up collar and cuffs are made of velvet with pearls sawn on it and decorated with pleated ruffle. Short velvet sleeves are sewn on the lowered shoulder, finished with a wide ornament of pearls. Below, the sleeve is made of muslin, arranged into six puffs where creases like in the insertion above the neckline are sewn with ribbon and pearls. Belt is decorated with densely sewn pearls and ornamental round buckle. Skirt made of rectangular gores is densely creased around the perimeter of waist. Headgear is a bonnet richly decorated with pearls. |
